Back to making pipe smoking videos

It has been a long time since I posted last. Sorry about the lack of content this year. My hiatus is over and there is fresh content and lots of news coming up.

Over the weekend I made two new YouTube videos – one about short term storage and the ugly things that happen when you don’t store pipe tobacco with proper care. The other covers steps you can take to make repairs if you let some pipe tobacco go dry.

Hey eric, im new to pipe smoking. This may seem like a novice question, but how do i clean the bowl of my pipe? I dont want to do something wrong and mess up my pipe. My uncle used to smoke out of a pipe when i was younger, but i havent seen him in probably 14 years. I do have to say i have learned more from watching your videos. I bought a corncob Pipe and fell in love with smoking out of a pipe. I love the flavor and just everything about it. So if you could please help me learn anything and everything about pipe smoking i would very much appreciate it. Thank you:)

Going out on a limb here…I’m guessing you are talking about removing the carbon buildup (cake) that forms around the inside of the bowl? I like to use a reamer made for that purpose. Don’t get the little cheap ones. They are an investment. If that isn’t an option, very slowly, very carefully, use some fine grit sandpaper wrapped around a dowel or your finger.

Many thanks for vids! I can relate pretty well with what you said on the first one, as I tend to have a lot of different blends open at the same time and some tins will inevitably get too dry. In fact, a couple of days ago I started craving for some latakia (I’m usually more of an aromatic or VaPer kinda guy) so i grabbed a tin of Presbyterian mixture I had opened almost a year ago. Despit being wrapped in a plastic bag, the tobacco was just bone dry. I smoked it like that anyway, but it was not as pleasent as it could be. So I guess next time I hit the grocery store I’ll be buying myself some jars.

As for the rehydrating method, I like your idea of placing a damp paper towel on a container, next to the tobacco tin. A few years ago I tried to rehydrate a pouch of captain black using a bit of apple skin. It might have been some sort of mishap, but when I opened the pouch again to throw the apple skin away there was mould everyewhere, so I had to dispose of the whole thing. I never tried to rehydrate any pipe tobacco ever since. But, as I said, your method does make sense so I’m gonna give it a shot with the PM tin.

Thanks for commenting Bruno. You might also want to take a look at my YouTube channel – a long time ago I did another video on rehydrating tobacco by placing the tobacco in a bowl and the towel over the top. I think I like my more recent method more.

Just a quick heads up. I left the PB tin in the container for two days and a half and it turned out quite well. I’m frankly impressed! Yesterday I checked the tobacco’s moisture level and gave it a stir, as the upper layer was moister than the bottom’, as one would expect, and decided to leave it for an extra day for a smoother hydration, so to say.
Thanks once again for this wonderful method! You sir, just saved this lad a tin of tobacco from going to waste.

My father and I have both become pipe smokers in the last couple of years and it was your videos and blog posts that got us started. We’ve even started making our own pipes. Thanks for commenting. I have no real experience with storing tobacco in those plastic jars. I am definitely afraid to trust them for long term storage. And with the way my preferences drift short term storage often becomes long term storage before I realize it. Hope that makes sense. I would think they’d be fine for a month or two if the seal is really good.

Great info. I just started watching your videos and being a new pipe smoker this info is gold. I too started in the Navy stationed here in Guam. Cigars were getting too expensive so I tried the pipe and haven’t looked back. I’m looking at moving into something besides aeromatics now and I enjoy your reviews on the different flavors out there. Hey I am brand new into pipe smokeing. I just ordered my first pipe online. Its the Big Ben brand and the pipe is the Presidential. I was wondering if this is considered a cheap one or a decent starter pipe or one that is good. What would you be willing to pay for such a pipe? I paid 40 dollars. Any review on the pipe or brand will be helpfull. Also I got a captain black sample pack. All 5 flavors. My grandfather smoked captian black white package. I figure ill try that.
